People of Substance with Erika Yalowitz

On Activism and Volunteerism

Erika Yalowitz is one of those incredibly interesting and tireless people who does it all. Originally from Columbia, I’ve heard her talk about political unrest and guerrillas taking over the Supreme Court just a few miles from her home. By day she works with at-risk youth and advocates for women seeking protection. She volunteers – we actually met while volunteering for BRAWS, an organization providing menstrual supplies and undergarments to women and girls in need. Erika has run for a local office and she is now a part of exclusive Political Leaders Programs here in Virginia. We discussed women’s issues, the importance of representation, and activism.

People of Substance by LemonSkies are a series of conversations that introduce you to people working within the nonprofit sector. While we touch on trends and best practices, this is first and foremost about getting to know interesting individuals in our space.
